Salem

Wildcat Twp., Tipton Co., Indiana

Salem Cemetery is located north of County Road 600N and east of State Road 213 at the forks of Mud and Turkey Creeks. The lane leading to the cemetery along Turkey Creek was once part of the main road running north from Windfall to Howard County.

The first interment here was that of John Morris in 1846 on land later to be owned by Silas Mitchell and his descendants from 1848 to 1964. The cemetery was platted about 1850. September 30, 1854, Silas and his wife Jane deeded to the trustees of the Salem Baptist Church this parcel of land. Mary A. Mitchell was the last person to be buried at Salem in 1929.

Rows are numbered east to west; stones south to north. I made no attempt to match the D.A.R.'s system of numbering.  Gae and I will return next spring to create a cemetery map.
